Sky Watch Friday

Here is a picture taken during a camping trip to the upper peninsula last summer. This is where the Two Hearted river drains into Lake Superior between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point. This is a favorite place of mine and I hear there is great trout fishing here.

Sky Watch Friday

These pictures were taken during the same trip as my last post. This is the view where water meets sky on Lake Superior near the eastern entrance of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The top view is looking east toward the Grand Sable Dunes and the town of Grand Marais, and the view on the bottom is looking west toward the Au Sable Point lighthouse. If you look very closely near the farthest point, you will see a white spot which is the lighthouse.

Grand Marais, Michigan

Every summer, and sometimes in the fall, someone in my family and I make a trip to Michigan's upper peninsula. This is a favorite place of ours to visit, and it has been somewhat of a family tradition to make this annual trip. My grandparents introduced me to this beautiful place when I went with them on a camping trip to Bay Mills campground at age nine.

Grand Marais, which is near the eastern entrance of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, is one of the places we most often go when we make our trip up to the U.P. On our most recent visit, during the first week of November, I went with my grandma, my aunt, and my mom. We stayed at the Voyageurs Motel, where, as you can see, there was a magnificent view of the Grand Marais harbor and Lake Superior. We only went for an overnight stay, so we didn't get to stick around long to enjoy this wonderful view, but it was a nice visit, and luckily, we had a few surprisingly warm, mid 70 degree, days of weather. It was great and I can't wait until the snow melts so we can get back up there.

3) The view from the backside of the motel that overlooks the harbor, town, and Lake Superior. If you look closely, near the center, you can see the lighthouse and the breakwall.

Sky Watch Friday

Wow, is it Friday already? Where did the week go? Oh, that's right, I've been helping my husband repaint the entire downstairs of our house all week, that's why it's flown by. In the meantime, my housework has suffered big time. I guess that means I'll be restoring order around here today and hoping I'll get caught up before the weekend rolls in this afternoon.

Here's a shot I took during a camping trip to the upper peninsula in July. The sun is going down over Lake Superior, while a bug heads in for the night. ;-)

Written In Sand

A few pictures I took during our camping trip to Lake Superior. I took these over a short lapse of time while watching the sun fade to the west.

Grand Sable Dunes & Log Slide

These photos are of the Grand Sable Dunes and Log Slide area along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's upper peninsula.

The spot where I was taking the picture from is almost 300 feet from the water below. It is recommended that if you decide to walk, or slide for that matter, down the dunes, and make the walk back up, you should plan on having at least an hour for the return climb, and you should also not have a heart condition. We decided to enjoy the view from above. Maybe next time we visit, we'll ride on one of the charter boats to get the view from down below.

Back in the late 19th century, this spot was used by loggers who rolled and slid the logs down the dunes on a wooden slide to be loaded on lumber schooners waiting in the cold waters below.

Driftwood

I found this piece of driftwood on a Lake Superior beach during our camping trip in June. Up in the top left corner, covered with fog, is Lake Superior.

St. Mary's Bridge

I snapped these photos while we were on our trip in the upper peninsula. This is the St. Mary's Bridge which crosses the St. Mary's river and connects the US side of Sault Ste. Marie to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. The St. Mary's river connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron, and is also where the Soo Locks are located.

Lake Superior Campsite View

This past June, my family and I went on a week long camping trip to Lake Superior State Campground in Michigan's upper peninsula. This was the view looking out at Lake Superior from our campsite.

Lake Superior Agate

We find these semi-precious treasures along the shores of Lake Superior every year when we go on our annual camping trip. This was the first one I found on our most recent trip this past June.

Crisp Point Lighthouse

I usually make a trip up to this lighthouse every couple of years. Sometimes, as was the case this year, there is a caretaker there and they will let you go in and look out from the top of the lighthouse. It is quite a sight to look out over the majesty of Lake Superior from the top. Very beautiful...

In Loving Memory

I came across this memorial on a Lake Superior beach in Grand Marais, Michigan during a camping trip in August of 2007. I was curious as to the story behind the names on the cross, so I did a little research and found the following link.
